Yesterday, I cosponsored an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that would prevent the military from detaining United States citizens indefinitely as "enemy combatants." I also spoke on the Senate floor about the importance of maintaining our civil liberties and the legislative branch's responsibility to adhere to both the letter and the spirit of the Constitution. Even after the failure of the Super Committee, Congress still has an obligation to cut spending, balance the budget, and make the necessary reforms to restrain its ability to do significantly greater damage to our economy.
