Further Thoughts on Volunteerism Trends and Data Issues
Jan 29, 2018
In an analysis last year, Volunteerism in America, the Social Capital Project found that rates of volunteerism have either held steady or risen over the past forty years—a rare indicator of the health of our associational life that has not worsened over the period. Our initial report, What We Do Together, also highlighted the increase in hours of volunteering per person over time.
Floor Speech on the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
Jan 29, 2018
Mr. President,
Right now, the United States is one of just seven countries in the whole world that allow elective abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
And we are not in good company.
Of the other six countries that allow elective abortions at that late stage, half are authoritarian communist countries with horrible records on human rights.
One Weird Trick To End Government Shutdowns
Jan 26, 2018
A week ago, the government shuttered its doors. For roughly 68 hours, the men and women of our armed services did not know when they would receive their next paycheck.
When the government reopened, it was because Congress passed and the President signed a Continuing Resolution (CR) that allowed the government to be funded – but only for three weeks. And the CR passed this Monday was needed because the four-week CR before that ran out. And that CR was preceded by another CR that passed right before Christmas.
The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
Jan 26, 2018
At twenty weeks past conception a baby can sleep and wake in the womb. She can suck her thumb, make faces, and see light filtering in through the womb.
And by 20 weeks, if not before, science suggests that baby can also feel pain.
Remarks to the National Association of Evangelicals-Christian Student Leadership Conference
Jan 23, 2018
I'd like to start by thanking the National Association of Evangelicals for inviting me to speak.
It is heartening to see so many young Christians who are engaged with their faith as well as public controversies-and so early in the morning, too.
This conference is a unique opportunity for you to learn about the serious challenges facing our country, and how Christians can respond to them.
The Enhancing Educational Opportunities for all Students Act
Jan 19, 2018
A few weeks ago, parents across the country bundled their kids up and sent them back to school after the holiday break. For some this meant loading them onto a bus that would drop their child off at a nearby private school, walking their child down the street to the local public school, driving them a town over to a charter school, or herding them down into the basement to resume home schooling.
Earmarks Are Not The Solution
Jan 19, 2018
Remember earmarks, those infamous, special-interest spending provisions party leaders used to sprinkle over legislation like sugar to get representatives and senators to hold their noses and vote yes on bills they would otherwise oppose?
You probably haven’t heard about earmarks lately, thank goodness. Republicans banned them when the Tea Party class came to Washington in 2010 opposed to the crony corruption. Who can forget pork-barrel embarrassments like the “Bridge to Nowhere,” the “Monuments to Me” projects that members got named after themselves, or the turtle tunnel in Florida (yes, it’s a tunnel for turtles)? Earmarks were everything Americans couldn’t stand about Washington – corrupt, wasteful, entitled, and out of touch.
Are All Men Created Equal, Or Are Some More Equal Than Others?
Jan 19, 2018
Mr. President, today hundreds of thousands of Americans from all walks of life will participate in the 45th annual March for Life.
Why do these citizens march, year after year?
It certainly isn't for their health. Or for the media coverage.
No, these Americans march on behalf of those who cannot.
Sen. Mike Lee: Say no to the return of the Swamp Thing (aka earmarks)

Sen. Lee Questions International Court Attack on State Sovereignty
Jan 17, 2018
“Given that the United States is the predominant funder of the Organization of American States it is of great concern that one of its international courts has issued an opinion recommending Costa Ricans to change their law,” Sen. Lee said. “The United States must do more to safeguard religious liberties around the world, prevent taxpayer dollars from funding ineffective international organizations, and most importantly uphold national sovereignty and the principles of subsidiarity.”
