The Perpetual Amnesty Act of 2018

Yesterday, eight Republican senators joined with 46 Democrats to vote for a bill that would have established a de facto rolling amnesty for unlimited numbers of illegal immigrants.
The final vote total fell six short of the 60 needed to end debate, with three Democrats crossing the aisle to vote with Republicans because they opposed the bill’s increased spending. If amnesty supporters can convince those three Democrats that $25 billion in higher spending is no big deal, then they will be just three votes away from moving their bill through the Senate.

Since President Lyndon Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1964, the federal government has spent over $22 trillion on means-tested welfare programs. And what do we have to show for it?
When the official poverty rate was introduced in 1969, an estimated 12.8 percent of Americans were in poverty. According to the most recent data available, from 2016, that number is basically unchanged at 12.7 percent.
Rising Unwed Pregnancy and Childbearing across Educational and Racial Groups

Nonmarital childbearing has increased dramatically in the United States. In 1960, roughly 5 percent of births were outside of marriage. Today, over 40 percent of children are born to single mothers. This trend is troubling, considering that children are on average at-risk for poorer outcomes when raised outside a married-parent home.1 As we explain in our recent report, Love, Marriage, and the Baby Carriage: The Rise in Unwed Childbearing, several factors contributed to the increase in nonmarital births. The most significant factors, however, have been the decline in “shotgun marriage” (unions occurring between a nonmarital conception and a birth) and the drop in marriage altogether.

Last night, Congress passed a continuing resolution (CR) that will keep the federal government funded through March 23. This is the fifth Continuing Resolution of the fiscal year—a sixth may be needed before March 23, since both parties have agreed to begin debate on an immigration bill next week.
A Threat to Marriage from the EEOC

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission may seem like an unlikely threat to religious liberty and the institution of marriage. After all, the federal agency was created to combat workplace discrimination by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. But sadly, the agency created to fight discrimination now threatens to discriminate itself; one nominee to the commission’s five-member board wants to use the federal agency’s power to undermine our nation’s founding principles.

I do not know Lucas. For he is only 18 months old – and so has the good sense not to consort with politicians. But like millions of Americans who have not met Lucas, I will never forget him.
