Thank you for your interest in interning with Senator Lee’s office! The Senator and his staff are committed to providing capable and deserving students with the opportunity to fulfill a Senate internship. The program allows college students a forum in which they may enhance their studies with the practical application of studied concepts in a fast-paced congressional office. The experience that comes with an internship has proven valuable for many students as they see the inner workings of the Senate and the American legislative process.

A limited number of internships are available each session. Preference is given to college students who are attending a Utah university and residents from Utah who are attending schools outside of the state. All internship positions in Senator Lee’s offices are paid.

Interns will be expected to work as part of the Senator’s team. Students should be able to adapt to the demanding environment of a Congressional office while promoting Senator Lee’s policies and goals. Excellent writing and communication skills will be expected.


Internship Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma
  • Internships are only available to current college students or students who graduated the semester immediately before their internship; priority for Washington, DC internships is given to college juniors and seniors
  • Current law students and graduate students are eligible to apply, but should be aware that the program is geared towards undergraduate students
  • Students of every major are encouraged to apply
  • Priority is given to students who are from Utah, who attend a university in Utah, or who have other connections to Utah - if a connection is present but not apparent, a paragraph in the cover letter explaining Utah ties is recommended
  • Applicants must be hard-working, enthusiastic, possess strong communication skills and have an interest in public policy


Interning in Washington, D.C.

As an intern in Washington D.C. students are able to gain firsthand knowledge of the legislative process along with a front row seat to the workings of the federal government. We encourage students to take advantage of their time in the nation’s capital. Visiting the sites, museums, offices, and institutions that represent our history and country will provide a valuable culmination to the overall experience.

Our office is not able to assist with logistics of travel to Washington. All living and travel arrangements are solely the responsibility of the student. (Many Utah colleges have accommodation arrangements in place for students interning in Washington—contact your school’s office for additional information.)


Interning in Salt Lake City, Utah

While interning in the state office, students will be at the forefront of Senator Lee’s efforts in serving Utahns. Students will have many unique opportunities not experienced in Washington D.C. as they assist the Senator’s staff in serving his constituents.

All travel and living arrangements are the responsibility of the intern.


Internship Responsibilities:

As an intern, some of your responsibilities may include:

  • Attending Senate hearings
  • Assisting with research on specific projects
  • Sorting and replying to constituent inquiries and mail
  • Tracking the progress of legislation
  • Meeting and interacting with constituents in the office
  • Answering telephones
  • Attending and assisting with constituent events

The application for Spring 2025 applications is October 18, 2024. Applications received after these dates will not be eligible for their respective session’s consideration.

Internship Application

Interviews:

  • Interviews for Spring Session internships (Jan – May) occur during the Fall of the prior year.
  • Interviews for Summer Session internships (May – Aug) occur in early Spring of the same year.
  • Interviews for Fall Session internships (approximately Aug – Dec) occur late Spring of the same year.

Specific dates and time may vary from year to year. Interviews are usually conducted at various Utah university campuses, in-person at one of Senator Lee’s offices, or over the phone.
